Dressing for the Office

Dressing appropriately for an office environment can be a challenge, especially in certain industries. Your position within the company can also make a difference in your attire, as the more creative type businesses such as advertising and graphic design will typically accept more creativity in their employees’ wardrobes.Conversely, those working in law offices, accounting firms and banking institutions will probably be asked to dress more conservatively.

For women, a suit, complete with low heels and stockings, makes the perfect conservative office attire. You can always add a bit of color or flair with a scarf or minimal jewelry. When dressing for a less formal setting, a skirt and blouse or sweater can be paired with trendy footwear. Wearing pants and slacks in the office is also much more acceptable for women, however, care must be taken to maintain a professional appearance. Some situations may even allow dressy jeans, especially if paired with heels and a blazer or jacket.

Office attire for men remains much less negotiable. In formal situations, a suit and tie is nearly always required. More casual environments can lead to a blazer over chinos and a button down shirt, or even just a dress shirt with slacks. Men should limit their jewelry to a bare minimum in office environments, and try to keep longer hair pulled back and controlled.

Casual days will also vary depending upon the formality of the office in question. While many corporations allow jeans on casual Fridays, you should keep in mind that those jeans should be without holes or tears, even when this is in style.

Deciding on a career takes a great deal of time, consideration and an understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses.
