Meet Siti
Helping Siti recovering her employment termination entitlements
Siti is a Migrant Domestic Worker who was sexually assaulted and raped by her employer's husband.
Equal Justice 平義社 has been helping Siti to understand and manage not one, but six, complex and inter-related legal cases than span criminal, employment, discrimination, healthcare and maintenance payments and, for her baby son, identity and his paternity.
Siti's hardship is further compounded by the access to justice barriers she faces: her legal literacy is very low; she is unfamiliar with legal proceedings and structures; she is not sufficiently fluent English or Cantonese and so every communication and step must be translated and explained to ensure she is empowered to make informed decisions; she is also a new mum, poor and has no family support here.
With our support, Siti has successfully recovered her employment termination entitlements. We continue to support her with her other claims. We expect her cases will take months, possibly years, to conclude. Meantime, we very much hope that the paternity and maintenance claims can proceed more quickly so as to alleviate their poverty and so her son has a complete legal identity - a fundamental right for every person.
