LEGAL FIRST AID AND CASEWORK

Two people are working at a desk with laptops, papers, and pens, engaged in a discussion or collaboration.

Whether you are an individual or an NGO assisting a client who is facing a legal problem, we can help.

WHAT WE DO

We solve everyday legal problems such as:

  • Employment and discrimination

  • Family problems and divorce

  • Immigration and legal identity

  • Medical and benefits access

  • Education access

  • Housing access

  • Personal injuries

  • Probate

  • Online scams

We do not provide legal advice and representation, but if required, we can connect you with pro bono lawyers who can provide assistance and advice

LEGAL FIRST AID

We provide Legal First Aid as the first point of contact for anyone seeking our support with a legal problem.  As first responders, our Legal First Aid caseworkers will;

  • Help you understand your problem and identify possible solutions
Caseworkers assess whether your issue has potential legal solutions, explain the main legal issues to you, and help you plan the best way to navigate the justice ecosystem.

  • Provide legal information and empowering self‑help
We provide you with clear legal information and direct you to the appropriate community or public resources for free or aided legal help.

  • If your problem does not have a legal solution, but you still need help on other matters, we can refer you to other social welfare or humanitarian resources.

Many matters can be resolved at this stage through tailored information, navigation assistance, early intervention, and referrals to trusted partners.

IN-DEPTH CASEWORK

If your case is complex or if you need hands-on case support a dedicated caseworker will be assigned to walk with you to move the case forward.  Depending on your needs and the complexity of the case, the case may be handled by our team directly or supported by external lawyers.

In-depth Casework includes:

  • Ongoing assistance and case support
Working side-by‑side with you to assist with case planning, document drafting, coordination, translation assistance, or liaising with counterparties, government departments or other authorities.

  • Partnering with external lawyers when needed
When legal expertise is required, we refer to and co‑work with pro bono lawyers through CLIX—our Pro Bono Matching Platform—or help clients apply for public legal assistance from the Legal Aid Department. Under the Hong Kong Bar Association exemption, we can also directly instruct barristers for pro bono legal advice, and we are a referring agency of the Duty Lawyer Service Free Legal Advice Scheme.

WHO WE HELP

We help people who, for whatever reason, are unable to access the legal system themselves.  We respond to individuals who approach us directly, as well as those referred by NGO partners and Government Departments. We also support NGO caseworkers assisting clients with legal problems.

Throughout a client’s legal journey, be it an enquiry or a more complex case, we act as an intermediary and advocate, offering clear guidance, coordination, and support. While we do not provide legal advice ourselves, we offer essential first‑line assistance and, when required, longer term support and connection to our network of around 100 pro bono law firms and barristers’ chambers to ensure everyone receives the legal help they need.
