Meet Charles

Supporting Charles regaining financial independence

Charles, an elderly Hong Kong man, who fell victim to an unprovoked and brutal attack that left him with serious head and leg injuries. After recovering from multiple, intensive surgeries, and unable to care for himself, Charles was transferred to an elderly care home.

The Social Welfare Department was appointed to act for Charles to handle his Comprehensive Social Security Assistance ("CSSA") - but when Charles called us, he told us he wanted to be in control of his life and his finances himself.

Through letters of enquiry, Equal Justice 平義社 established that the medical certificate declaring Charles unfit to be in charge of his own finances had, in fact, long expired.

Thanks to our intervention, Charles regained autonomy over his finances.

We also asked partner NGO Health in Action to help Charles. They followed up with various hospitals about his medical condition and secured a referral to a medical social worker.

But he is now a few steps closer to living independently once more and being able to take care of himself, and his own finances, once again.

*Charles is a pseudonym.
